“DB Pig”
Description:
The DB pig is my fun , lively ‘hybrid pig’. Aimed at the more skilled longboarder, it retains many of the characteristics of a traditional pig, but in a more functional package, whilst still allowing the more advanced surfer the chance to master something unlike most other things they have in their quiver.
The DB pig was designed for local surfer Danni Bradford. Known and admired for her effortless old skool style, whippy faded turns, head dips, stretch five’s, and no paddle take off’s! Danni attributes the development of her distinctive style to the “freedom of expression” she got from riding her DB pig.
With the DB Pig you get all the fun and liveliness a traditional pig is renowned for, without any of the drawbacks, and something much more functional and suited to our British waves
One of defining characteristics of a traditional ‘pig’ is its outline. I’ve kept this true to form with a narrow drawn in nose, wide point pulled back from centre and broad hips. The hips and wide point create an ample amount of curve though the back half of the outline, and combined with the rolled belly create a loose, jivey, ball bearing feel to the ride. It makes stylish, quick directional adjustments a breeze. This is helped even further by the narrowed nose which reduces the swing weight and gently rolled belly all the way to the tail.
One of the challenging aspects of a traditional pig is the typical glassed on ‘D’fin, positioned right on the tail of the board. I’ve swapped this for a fin box positioned further up from the tail and the recommendation of a raked fin with decent flex. This gives more of a whippy feel, is more forgiving, and retains good hold for time spent up on the nose. Where I have broken with tradition is to add a blended nose concave to enable the more skilled riders the opportunity for cheater 5’s and the occasional hang ten. The flipped tail rocker and 50/50 rails nose to tail also facilitate greater opportunities for tip time.
